There were a further four sessions of play at the World Senior Curling Championships 2018 on Wednesday (25 April), the second-last day of round-robin play in the event being held in Oestersund, Sweden.

Despite losing by 7-8 to Sweden in women’s Group A, results elsewhere meant that Canada now joined United States, who had earlier beaten Australia by 6-1, in gaining qualification to the Play-off stage. Canada and United States share the same won five, lost one record, while Sweden sit in third place on four wins and one loss.

In women’s Group B, Switzerland and Scotland also sealed their qualification. Switzerland continued their six-game unbeaten run with an 8-5 win over Latvia while, in second place behind them, Scotland had an 8-2 victory over New Zealand. Later, England beat Italy by 6-4 to move into joint third place with Finland.

In men’s Group A, Australia recorded their fifth win without loss, beating Czech Republic by 8-5 to qualify for the play-offs. In the evening session, defending champions Sweden beat Scotland by 6-1 to join Australia in the play-offs.

The three qualifiers from men’s group B have now been determined – Switzerland, Canada and Germany. In Wednesday’s play, Switzerland beat Turkey by 10-2, Canada had a 12-3 win over England, and Germany beat Belgium by 7-1.

Norway had already qualified from men’s Group C, but in the battle to join them, Latvia beat Russia by 5-4 after an extra end, but later lost to United States, who themselves had earlier lost by 8-9 after an extra end to Ireland.

In men’s Group D, already-qualified leaders Denmark had a day off, but behind them New Zealand beat Israel by 7-6, a result that means the New Zealanders and third-placed Wales now go on to the play-offs.
